Records: What’s left for Roger Federer?

February 9, 2018 By G.O.A.T Leave a Comment

What records can Roger Federer still break? There’s something to be said about the long-fabled career of Roger Federer. But of all the records he’s already set, what are some records Mr. Federer could still, and likely, break. Oh, and I’m talking about Open Era records, keep that in mind.

What Records Are Left for Roger Federer?

Ranking Records

Most years ended at No.1 :

  • All-time : Pancho Gonzales, Bill Tilden and Pete Sampras (6 times)
  • Active player : Roger Federer (5 times)

Oldest No.1 player : Roger Federer has already beaten this record (my thoughts here)!

  • All-time : Bill Tilden (38 years and 324 days in 1931)
  • Open Era : Andre Agassi (33 years, 4 months in 2003)
  • Active player : Rafael Nadal (31 years and 8 months currently)

Oldest player to end a year in the Top 10 :

  • Pancho Gonzales (43 years, 1 month in 1969)

Oldest player to end a year in the Top 100 :

  • Ken Rosewall (44 years, 1 month in 1978)

Grand Slams Records

Oldest Grand Slam singles winner :

  • All-time : Arthur Gore (41 years, 6 months at the 1909 Wimbledon)
  • Open Era : Ken Rosewall (37 years, 2 months at the 1972 AO)
  • Active player : Roger Federer (36 years, 5 months at the 2018 AO)

Most years winning a slam:

  • 11 (tied with Rafael Nadal)
  • Most USO finals: 7 (record is 8 by Pete Sampras and Ivan Lendl)
  • Consecutive Australian Open wins: 2 (Novak Djokovic has 3)
  • USO titles: 5 (tied with Pete Sampras and Jimmy Connors)
  • AO titles: 6 (tied with Novak Djokovic and Roy Emerson)
  • Slam finals lost: 10 (Ivan Lendl had 11)

Most titles in a career

Most singles titles :

  • All-time: Rod Laver (200 titles)
  • Open Era: Jimmy Connors (109 titles)
  • Active player: Roger Federer (96 titles)

Most singles titles after 30th birthday :

  • Rod Laver (38 titles)
  • Active player: Roger Federer (29 titles)

Most matches won

Most singles matches won :

  • All-time: Ken Rosewall (1633 wins)
  • Open Era: Jimmy Connors (1256 wins)
  • Active player: Roger Federer (1139 wins)

Most matches won after trailing 0:2 in sets:

  • Aaron Krickstein, Boris Becker, Roger Federer (10 wins)

Most five-set matches won :

  • Open Era: Ivan Lendl (36 wins)
  • Active player: Roger Federer (30 wins)

Other records

Most singles finals played :

  • All-time: Rod Laver (282 finals)
  • Open Era: Jimmy Connors (164 finals)
  • Active player: Roger Federer (145 finals)

Most singles matches played in a career :

  • All-time: Ken Rosewall (2292 matches)
  • Open Era: Jimmy Connors (1535 matches)
  • Active player: Roger Federer (1389 matches)

Oldest singles title winner on the ATP Tour :

  • Pancho Gonzales (43 years, 273 days – Kingston 1972)

Oldest match winner on the ATP Tour :

  • Ken Rosewall (45 years, 11months – Melbourne Indoor 1980)

Roger Federer Overall records:

  • Consecutive seasons reached a final: 19 (tied with Connors)
  • Grass court wins: 164 (Connors has 170)
  • year-end #1: 5 (Sampras had 6)
  • year-end, top 4: 13 (Connors had 14)

As you can see, there are several records that Roger Federer can break, but some of them might be out of reach – Oldest singles title winner, Oldest match winner; and of course the clay records Rafael Nadal has set. While some are within reach – titles won, matches won, Year End #1, Grass court wins, singles matches played in a career, and oldest “Open Era” #1.

The remainder of the 2018 ATP season will prove to be a time of records broken and another confirmation that Roger Federer is the Greatest Of All Time…hands down.
