2012 Wimbledon is finally underway! I have been waiting for The Championships to start since the end of the French Open, I am sure you have been waiting as well. As the first day of the first round of 2012 Wimbledon has come to a close, the winners and losers have been weeded out. Already there are a few unforeseen upsets, some surprise victories, and of course the predictable match outcomes.
Which seeds are still in 2012 Wimbledon after day 1 of the first round:
Novak Djokovic
Radek Stepanek
Juan Monaco
Roger Federer
Julien Benneteau
Fernando Verdasco
Giles Simon
Aljandro Falla
Janko Tipsarevic
Mikhail Youzhny
Florian Mayer
Richard Gasquet
Now, it’s not real big news that the above seeds are still in the 2012 Wimbledon championships, the bigger story lies with the unpredictable upsets that happened on day 1.
2012 Wimbledon Round 1 upsets
First off John Isner, the 11th seed, who I thought for sure would have a deep run this year. The American, who you can all remember, had that epic match at Wimbledon against Nicola Mahut, which was played over 3 days and lasted over 11 hours, could not find his stride in his first round match against Colombian Alejandro Falla. Perhaps it was the unforced errors (49) lost him the match. Or even not being able to capitalize on break points. Though you could say that the nightmare of playing another five set match might have spooked him into folding. Wouldn’t you have fears of having to play another exhausting five setter? In any event, Isner lost; it’s too bad, I was hoping he would go further.
The other mind blowing 2012 Wimbledon upset came from the tennis racquet of Ernests Gulbis. Gulbis took took out 2010 Wimbledon finalist, Tomas Berdych, in straight sets. I was a bit shocked with this 2012 Wimbledon upset, especially in straight sets. I would have thought for sure it would have gone at least four sets. The Latvian kept calm and collected, played his points and minimized the errors. It all turned out peachy for Gulbis, this will be only his second 2nd round appearance at Wimbledon.
Also, on the women’s side of 2012 Wimbledon, American Venus Williams was ousted in two ugly sets, 6-1,6-3 to Russian Elena Vesnina. The 2012 Wimbledon first round loss for Venus has only been her second first round exit, her first being way back in 1997. Don’t you wonder if her sister will have the same fate tomorrow?
All other tennis matches at 2012 Wimbledon were pretty standard, Federer, the 6 time champion won an easy first round match, Djokovic, the 2011 Wimbledon champion, did as well. Tomorrow will be another day, where the second part of the first round of 2012 Wimbledon will take place. Nadal, Roddick, Del Potro, Raonic, Murray, Tsonga, and many more are scheduled to play.
