Aussie Samantha Stosur wins first US Open

September 11, 2011 By G.O.A.T

Wow…it’s hard to describe what I saw today during the 2011 US Open women’s final match against three time champion Serena Williams and first time finalist Samantha Stosur.

When Serena Williams took out current world #1 Caroline Wozniacki, I thought for sure that Williams would bully her way to lifting the coveted trophy. But much to her fans dismay, she landed in second place. Stosur was on FIRE! It was though she could not miss a ball, she played the perfect tennis match.

It was amusing to see the two female players who have the biggest muscles play on Arthur Ashe at the same time, but the match was super tense. Almost as if the world was waiting for Williams to blow a gasket and yell at somebody. Then it happened. I don’t want to go into too much detail about the outburst/meltdown/insanity/disrespect/whatever you want to call it, because this is about Samantha Stosur.

Sammy played an amazing match, she played with power, intent, and with a calmness I haven’t seen from her in recent years. I was impressed by the game plan the Aussie had, hitting away from Williams and not getting entangled in long rallies where Williams dominates. Stosur kept her composure as Williams went on her tirade about getting a point violation, so I absolutely applaud Stosurs’ professionalism during the match.

I’m sure Samantha is the hero of Australia right now, she even got tweets from Russel Crowe (the actor): “Congratulations Sam Stosur. Emphatic. Well done.” I don’t know if they’re friend, however; that really is pretty sweet to get a congratulatory message from the Oscar winner.

There is really nothing more I can say about this match, I don’t want to bag on Serena Williams for her actions on court today because that’s taking away from the true Champion, Samantha Stosur.

Oh and DH, a commenter from a couple of weeks ago, cheers to you buddy – told ya!

I wish Sam Stosur could read your admirable description of her exemplary skills. She has definitely earned the highest praise!
I too would like to raise a tall can of tennis balls to my little “friend” DH. Hopefully DH will never foot fault again.
