Ana Ivanovic Retires
In a somewhat strange tweet yesterday, former #1, Ana Ivanovic said that she had some important announcement to make on live stream through her Facebook page. There was a bit of speculation as to what was happening, with her followers tweeting to her about pregnancy and potentially retirement.
Unfortunately, the Serbian ranked at #63 currently, announced that because of her ongoing injuries she would no longer be playing professional tennis and will be “moving on to other things.”
Ana Ivanovic Retires – Not really shocking
Ivanovic has had some awful showings the past couple of seasons, most recently bouncing out of the 2016 US Open in the first round with the same result at Wimbledon and not much of a better result at the French Open and Australian Open. As well as not playing several other tournaments because of injuries.
It has been a while since she’s made a decent run and at nearing 30 years of age, she’s had a fairly respectable career. So it’s time. Ana Ivanovic retires from tennis is OK, she was ranked #1 in the world back in 2008, won the 2008 French Open, has won 15 WTA titles (additional 5 titles on the ITF circuit), has won over $15M in career prize money, recently got married, and has forged her name in the history of tennis. So it’s not sad.
Ana says she will remain involved in tennis as she will be an “ambassador of sport and healthy life” (whatever that means).
In closing, Ivanovic nearly in tears, says “stay tuned and I love you all”. Her announcement was less than 2 minutes long and seemed very scripted.
Anyway, we all probably saw it coming, poor performance and out of the spotlight, Ana Ivanovic retires from professional tennis isn’t really all that bad. She’s been an inspiration to many many little girls and boys all around the world. So, I guess, Happy Retirement Ana!
