Roger Federer, one of the greatest tennis players the world has ever seen, is only one Wimbledon title away from recapturing his ATP World Ranking of #1. The win would be monumental as it would tie him with Pete Sampras’ all time collective weeks at #1.
Of course, Roger Federer is not the only guy out there who is bidding to capture the #1 ranking, Rafael Nadal is also nipping at Djokovic’s heels for the top spot. Basically, it’s a points race right now, if Nadal wins 2012 Wimbledon he will regain the #1 spot. If Novak Djokovic wins 2012 Wimbledon, he will just keep his #1 ranking and go on with the rest of the year.
In order for Roger Federer to regain the #1 spot a lot of things will need to happen. First, Roger Federer is going to have to reach the Wimbledon finals and win. Second, Novak Djokovic will have to lose in the semifinals or earlier. Third, Roger Federer will likely face some stiff competition in the quarterfinals, so he’s going to have to persevere and recharge for a potential 2012 Wimbledon final.
Roger Federer 2012 season so far
It’s been a good year for the Swiss, winning 4 titles (Rotterdam, Dubai, Indian Wells, and Madrid). Roger Federer has already done well on grass this year, reaching the Halle final (loss to Tommy Haas). Roger Federer is no stranger to producing some of his best tennis at Wimbledon. Even if Roger Federer he has won Wimbledon 6 times, he has not reached the semifinals the last two years in a row, so it is not a complete shoe-in for the finals. Roger Federer, in my opinion, has been playing a much better tennis game the last several months. It is as if he is again playing with intent and looking to regain that #1 spot.
In my honest opinion, I do believe that Roger Federer could win 2012 Wimbledon and regain the top spot of the rankings. It is going to be a major uphill battle, he’s not the only guy out there who wants to win. What do you people think? Do you think Roger Federer will be able to win 2012 Wimbledon and regain the #1 ranking?
