2018 Wimbledon Seeds: WTA Seeding Complications
If you look at the WTA seeds, you’ll notice that #25 is Serena Williams. Serena Williams is currently ranked #183, not 25 in the world. That seems a bit suspect, I get it though. Serena Williams has won Wimbledon a record 7 times, which is nothing short of impressive, I just can’t wrap my head around her seeding.
As the #25 seed, Williams knocks out Dominika Cibulková from being seeded. Cibulková who is currently ranked #32 would have come in as the last seeded player had it not been awarded to Serena Williams. Dominika wasn’t shy about how she felt after learning that she’s no longer a seeded player at the 2018 Wimbledon Championships:
“I don’t think it’s the right thing to do,” she said.
“I think it’s just not fair. I have tried and I should be seeded. If they put her in front of me then I will lose my spot that I am supposed to have.
“I was a former number four, and it’s also like why should I not be seeded if I have the right to be?”
Wimbledon usually seeds women players based on their world rankings, but they reserve the right to change if it “is necessary to produce a balanced draw.”
I, personally, agree with Cibulková on this issue. I don’t think a player should get an arbitrary seeding because of who they are. Seeds are based on rankings and previous years’ performance (Williams did not play Wimbledon in 2017). I have already shared my thoughts on all the drama from Serena Williams not getting a seed at the French Open, to which I also agreed that she shouldn’t have received a seeding.
Look, the bottom line here is that Serena Williams left the tour to start a family, that’s fine no issues there, it’s just the blatant ignoring the other players efforts during her time away is what really annoys me. I do think there should be a maternity AND paternity protected ranking system in all of tennis, for all tournaments and all players. If you look at Victoria Azarenka, who also left the tour to start a family, a 20 title winner and 16 finalist trophies. She’s ranked #87, yet wasn’t awarded a seed at either the French Open or Wimbledon. So, why didn’t she get one? She was the top ranked player in 2012 after all. Just seems extremely biased. If a tournament is going to give something like a seeding to a returning player, it should absolutely be equal among the rest of the field. Equality, right?
Anyhow, draws come out this Friday for the 2018 Wimbledon Championships!
