Yeah, I know, I’m a little late to the party – I’ve been sick in bed. So Serena Williams won the 2011 Best Female Tennis Player ESPY Award on Wednesday, July 13th. Ummmm….WHAT? How is that even possible?
Apparently the people that voted didn’t realize that Serena Williams only played TWO tennis tournaments in 2011!!! How on earth did she win this award? I’m very much confused and appalled by this right now.
Ok, let’s look back at Serena’s 2011 tennis season….Australian Open – Did not play, Doha – Did not play, Indian Wells – Did not play, Miami – Did not play, Madrid – Did not play, French Open – Did not play, Eastbourne – Did Play (loss 4th round), and Wimbledon – Did play (loss 4th round). Are you flippen kidding me? If it takes only two tournament entries to be voted the best female tennis player then I could name a whole bunch of players that could win an ESPY.

I understand that Serena Williams had some crazy injuries that trickled over from the 2010 tennis season, which caused her to remain sidelined for a while. I do also respect her diligence to come back to the sport after so long to defend a title. However, for Williams to get an award claiming she is the best female tennis player is such complete insanity, I don’t know what else to say.
Is Serena Williams deserving of this award? Absolutely not. In the past yes, but not this year, she should not have even been nominated. I am completely dumbfounded by this decision. Maria Sharapova won the ESPY award a few years in a row, why couldn’t she win it? I mean, Sharapova has had a much more impressive record this year than Williams. I’m trying to find answers for this poor excuse for an award recipient; I’m just not coming up with anything. I would like to challenge that call….where is that Hawkeye thing?

It does seem unfair that Serena won it…
