Can Serena Williams Defend Her Wimbledon Title In 2011

June 9, 2011 By G.O.A.T

It’s been almost an entire calendar year since Serena Williams has played a competitive tennis match. If you don’t recall, Williams suffered a foot injury last year while she was dancing at a night club where she stepped on a piece of glass. Apparently her foot injury was serious enough to have surgery on her foot, I’m not clear on the exact details but it was clearly obvious that it was major. In early March of 2011, more bad new for Serena Williams, she suffered from a hematoma and a pulmonary embolism which had delayed her tennis training more; thankfully Williams has made a full recovery.

Williams’ has received a wildcard to the 2011 Eastbourne Tennis Championships, to get ready for her Wimbledon title defense. I say it’s a good place to start a grass court comeback, Williams is adored in England, so she should receive a warm welcome back to the game in Eastbourne.Wimbledon will be completely different game, one that I’m quite excited to watch.

Will the 4 time Wimbledon Champion be in form to defend her 2010 title? It’s really hard to say, I haven’t seen or heard of how well or how much Serena has been practicing over the last year. How she plays in Eastbourne will be a clear indicator of where she is in her recovery process. There’s no doubt that she will want to play her absolute best, but being out of competition for so long might have a big effect on her game, especially with a strong field of fierce competition there is – Clijsters, Zvonarvea, Li, Azarenka, Wozniacki, and so many more.

What are your thoughts on her comeback? Do you think she can win Wimbledon again? Why or why not?

Here’s a little poll for your voting enjoyment:

Can Serena win Wimbledon 2011?

  • Yes (57%, 4 Votes)
  • No (43%, 3 Votes)

Total Voters: 7

I doubt Serena can come back and win Wimby this year. She’s been out for so long, it’s hard to imgaine she’s anywhere near what she used to be back in the day. Of course it will be good to see her playing tennis again, but winning it is a long shot.
